If you shut your eyes tight and imagine what you want in life, the image that’ll possibly pop up is you lying on a beach with not a care in the world. Who wouldn’t want a life like this?
Unfortunately, this isn’t our calling. This isn’t even remotely close to what our calling is.
I’m one of the odd individuals who believes in a calling. A calling, as I see it, is a mission set upon your life. It is the plot or overall theme tying up the story of your life. It is where you must head and what you must accomplish.
A calling is not a job you want. That’s called a dream job. Your calling is the mission you’ve been given.
I believe we all have callings, or something we were meant to do. Mine, I believe, is to make a difference with my creative abilities. That results in a number of jobs, but for me, it doesn’t matter which job I get as long as I’m fulfilling that mission.
But here’s the catch with callings: when I tell people to find their calling, they search through their mind for options that make them happy, make them comfortable, or make them fulfilled in what they do.
And I don’t believe a calling should ever do that.
A calling is a burden on your life. It’s realizing that you are gifted in something, which means that you must pursue those gifts till they make a difference in the world. It means you must stretch yourself to make a change with your gifts.
Your calling isn’t for you; it’s for others. It’s to make a difference.
Oftentimes, we imagine what we want from life to feed our own selfish perspective. It’s not a bad thing; it’s a natural thing. If I’m being honest with you, what I want from life is a comfortable and stable living.
But pursuing your calling is the most unselfish thing you could do. At the essence of our callings is a drive to change the world. That’s what our callings are for.
Finding your calling won’t help you live the life you want. If anything, it’ll help you live the life you fear, the life where comfort is the last priority on the list.
Yet, the good news is, you’ll love the challenge.
Your calling won’t fulfill you in life, but it will give you a sense of purpose. It will drench your story with a thick plot drawing you forward. It will clarify the troubles in your life, make sense of the pain, and make moments of success even sweeter.
Your calling might not be what you exactly want, but it is better than anything we could ever want. And for me, that’s enough to give my calling everything I’ve got.
