I had a job that I hated once. It involved the sort of things to kill any spirit: the dulling of the brain to perform one repetitious task, the working of the muscles to wear you out, and the sloth-like wandering to slow you down walking from place to place. At night, I would collapse into my bed and feel as though I wasted my day- one of the worst feelings in the world for me to have.
But then, as I worked that job, I saw something that slapped me across the face as if it were my future trying to warn me . . .
Everyone was cynical.
The entire work environment breathed an intense amount of cynicism. I couldn’t stand it. It felt like I was entering into a room full of poison gas every time I went to work, and it was suffocating.
Early on, I chose not to be like my co-workers, and be happy about where I was. After that one decision, things began to change.
My co-workers became my friends and they commented that they loved working with me because I kept spirits bright. People started becoming less cynical, like hope was entering into the work environment.
Cynicism is a toxin so easily consumed in our culture. All we have to do is posture ourselves as the result of our circumstances, to not rise above them, and to give up hope.
To be cynical is to admit defeat.
And we grow very cynical once we allow for our wonderment and romantic view on life to be squelched by the reality of a 9-5 job, an income, taxes, and all the other burdensome things of the real world. We become so consumed in this world that doesn’t give us much hope to the point where the only option for us is to be cynical and suck the life dry in others.
But what would happen if we chose to be agents of hope with our day?
What if we breathed life to the people around us?
What if fantasy and reality aren’t as far apart as we think, and that we can all live a romantic view, if only we have the willpower to accomplish the extraordinary?
I believe the world has a lot to gain from people who choose life over death. We can be people of significance, but that often requires that we change our outlook life, choosing to accept the beauty and disregard the ugliness that tries to corrupt us.
It’s time to be victorious with your attitude on life. Rise above the circumstances that seek to bind you and keep the wonder.
The world is yelling and yearning for its beauty to be noticed. Be someone who shines a spotlight on that wonder. Never let another day pass by without you noticing it, and I promise you, change will follow in your footsteps.
Choose to live instead of be cynical.
